End of Summer Sweet Treat: Strawberry White Chocolate Smoothie

Let’s be real here: I am so ready for summer to come to an end! Fall is my absolute favorite season of the year. Crisp and fresh air. Boots. Knit Sweaters. Scarves. Rainy days. Warm coffee drinks. Cinnamon. This is why I loved Vancouver so much. I could enjoy all of my favorite things year round.

Since we now live in Southern California, I’m craving the cool weather like a madwoman. I don’t think my cravings will be fulfilled anytime soon, as I’ve heard it will still be very warm and sunny down here until late October.

Even though it is no longer strawberry season here, I am still able to find organic berries in my grocery store, and I keep buying them every week. I. Cannot. Stop. I usually eat half the basket and, after a day or two, chop up the rest to freeze for later in the year.

To cool off on one of those ridiculously hot summer days, I decided to blend up a refreshing and sweet summer treat to share with my 2-year old.

If you have a sweet tooth, this one’s for you!

Strawberry White Chocolate Smoothie

So easy: 1/2 frozen banana, 1 cup frozen strawberries (note: next time I’ll use fresh), 1/4 cup white chocolate chips, milk (or non-dairy drink of your choice) to thin it out. I used almond milk and the whole thing turned out super sweet and creamy.

The smoothie combines the sweetness of white chocolate and juicy ripe strawberries and I won’t tell anyone if you top yours with whipped cream. ;)

I usually enjoy my smoothies with greens, less sweet and without milk, but for a hot summer day like today, and when I’m in the mood for ice cream but our freezer is empty, this works perfectly for me.

Summer Coffee Treat: Eiskaffee

We recently got a Keurig K-cup coffee maker and I’m a little obsessed trying out all the different types and flavors of coffee.

Side note: Did you notice I am spelling things the American way, now that we no longer live in Canada. Flavor definitely used to be flavour, but I’m trying to adapt, you know? ;)

I’m still struggling with the conversion to Fahrenheit though. And pounds, ounces (there are fluid ounces too, right?) and miles.

So, anyway, on one of those super hot days a couple of weeks ago, I just felt sipping on a nice, sweet iced coffee. I remembered that we also had vanilla ice cream in the freezer and I decided to treat the little guy to a small bowl and then it hit me:

Scoop of ice cream + coffee = yummm!

This worked really well with the Starbucks Caffe Verona Dark Roast K-cup, but regular (dark) brewed coffee, or even espresso would be perfectly fine as well. Just make sure to use enough ice cream, to have your coffee cool down enough.

This is actually what is called Eiskaffee in German (fyi: there is no such thing as iced coffee – coffee over ice cubes – in Germany, except Starbucks-like American coffee shops, but it’s not very popular, at least when I was growing up there) and you can get it at all Gelaterias and ice cream places.

So, if you’re feeling extra-scrumptious or you simply can’t decide whether to have coffee or ice cream, why not try both in a glass?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day: Eat Something Green!

Hi friends, how was your week?

Mine was lovely! I enjoyed a fabulous Thursday filled with yoga, followed by a spontaneous yoga-moms coffee get-together, and ending with a shopping sesh at Whole Paycheque Foods.

Picked up a new Lifefactory glass water bottle (my old plastic one kept popping open in my bag…not cool):

I've been wanting this one for ages.

Love the smaller 450ml/16oz size. Another reason to remind myself to stay well hydrated – it’s so important, to flush out toxins and make your skin glow.

When I came home, I made  apricot puree (from dried organic apricots, cooked in water until soft, then pureed) for the little Mr., then started on making dinner for the big Mr., but turned out he was picking up some food for himself on the way home. So I scavenged the fridge and freezer and look what I found:

The last time I had them was when I still was pregnant and I totally forgot what an awesome new mom snack they can make! I had them in my freezer all those months, looking for healthy snacks in my cupboards and the fridge, and the freezer was only useful to store Haagen Dasz Mayan Chocolate Ice Cream. I started way too late on our intended Thursday dinner, and the Split Pea Soup was still simmering, so I decided on a random mix of foods:

The above mentioned edamame beans, slice of walnut and onion bread from the Swiss bakery (via Whole Foods) with cambozola cheese, and a small bowl of the Neal Brothers Organic Cheese Pops. Those were soooo yummy. ;) They even were on sale at WF (2 for $4!!!) – I should go back and get some more.

Friday we spent outside and got soaked in the rain on the way home, but a lovely sandwich made up for it:

And of course I had to start St. Patrick’s Day off with a delicious and nutritious green smoothie for breakfast. A great way to get some veggies in!

Well, I have to pack some things for a still unknown overnight trip with my two favourite guys. I have no clue what they have planned and it’s eating me up – patience is not my strong suit!

Do you randomly throw stuff together for meals? I used to, but nowadays I usually don’t, because it’s our time together as family. I like nice dinners (in or out) so I usually spend a lot of time on deciding, planning, shopping and cooking. But sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do, right? ;)

Do you like green smoothies? I love them!
